Description
Embarking on the installation of a new running track is an exciting endeavor for schools, clubs, and community groups. However, before diving into the installation process, it's crucial to ensure that the dimensions and space reserved for your running track are accurate.
While the traditional 400-meter ring is a common association with running tracks, they now come in diverse shapes and sizes. The choice of your running track dimensions depends on factors such as available space, the types of events you plan to host, and the specific preferences and needs of athletes. Taking these factors into account, your running track dimensions may significantly differ from the conventional size.
This guide aims to demystify terms related to running tracks, explore various dimensions, and offer valuable tips for layout and design.

Dimensions & Sizes
The IAAF Track and Field Facilities Standard Manual stipulates that the inner circumference of a standard sports track is 400 meters, of which the radius of the innermost curve should be 36.5 meters. The straight track should be along the north-south direction to avoid the dazzling effect when the sun is low. There should be 8 runways on the curve, 8 lanes with a width of 9.76m, each lane with a width of 1.22m, and 10 runways on the straight.
A "protruding edge" should be built on the inner edge of the runway, with a width of not less than 5cm and a height of 5.0 to 6.5cm. If no protruding edge is built, a 5cm wide marking line should be drawn. The safety area on the inside of the track should be no less than 1 meter, and it is best to have a 1 meter safety area on the outside. The starting area should be at least 3 meters, and the sprint buffer section should be at least 17 meters.
The maximum left and right slope of the runway shall not exceed 1:1000, and the downward slope in the direction of running shall not exceed 1:1000. The calculation line is used to calculate the perimeter of the runway and the perimeter of each lane, and is not drawn on the runway. The rules of track and field competition stipulate that the perimeter calculation line of the first lane is 0.30 meters away from the outer edge of the inner edge, and the perimeter calculation lines of the remaining lanes are 0.20 meters away from the outer edge of the inner lane line. Calculation conditions: The radius of the innermost curve should be 36.5 meters. The calculation line of the first perimeter is 0.30 meters away from the outer edge of the inner protruding edge, which is 400 meters. 1. Calculation of the length of the curve The sum of the lengths of the two curves of the semicircular track and field field is exactly equal to the circumference of a circle.
According to the circumference formula C=2πr, the calculated line length of the first lane is: 2×3.1416×(36.5+0.30)m=231.22m, the length of one curve is 228.08÷2=115.61m2, and the length of the straight section is calculated as two The length of the straight section = the total length of the runway - the length of the two curves = 400m – 231.22m = 168.78m. The length of a straight section is 168.78m÷2 = 84.39m3. Calculate the total length of the runway. The total length of the runway = two curves + two straights. Section length 231.22m + 168.78m =400m
The first calculated line length: 84.39*2+2*3.1416*(36.5+(1-1)*1.22+0.3)=400.002m
The second calculation line length: 84.39*2+2*3.1416*(36.5+(2-1)*1.22+0.2)=407.039m
The third calculated line length: 84.39*2+2*3.1416*(36.5+(3-1)*1.22+0.2)=414.704m
The fourth calculated line length: 84.39*2+2*3.1416*(36.5+(4-1)*1.22+0.2)=422.370m
The fifth calculated line length: 84.39*2+2*3.1416*(36.5+(5-1)*1.22+0.2)=430.035m
The sixth calculated line length: 84.39*2+2*3.1416*(36.5+(6-1)*1.22+0.2)=437.701m
The seventh calculated line length: 84.39*2+2*3.1416*(36.5+(7-1)*1.22+0.2)=445.366m
The eighth calculated line length: 84.39*2+2*3.1416*(36.5+(8-1)*1.22+0.2)=453.032m
